PAD aims to evaluate all human activities affecting natural and cultural landscapes from a perspective of societal and ecological benefit, and to reimagine these activities accordingly.

Activities and News

The Fourth Landscape Analysis Workshop, supported by PAD, was held in Adana. Held in two sessions at the Akif Kansu Meeting Hall of Çukurova University on November 26, 2024, the 4th Landscape Analysis Workshop presented the results of the TÜBİTAK-supported project No. 121O406, "Visibility Atlas of the Northern Aegean Coasts: Environmental Feasibility of Offshore Wind Turbines and a Geoterrestrial Planning Tool for Coastal Development." A discussion environment was created on this topic, and current issues related to landscape analysis were discussed.

Projects

This project aimed to promote the use of native, drought-resistant plant species in the parks of Çankaya, Ankara, as a response to increasing climate stress and water scarcity. By selecting plants naturally adapted to Central Anatolia’s dry steppe environment, the project encouraged sustainable landscaping practices. It also raised awareness among municipalities and producers about the ecological and economic benefits of using low-water plants in urban green spaces.

This project established strong international cooperation between Turkey and Portugal to promote rainwater harvesting as a climate adaptation measure. Through study visits, expert trainings, and public events, practical techniques were shared and tested in Çankaya, Ankara. A practical guide on climate adaptation through rainwater harvesting was also developed and widely distributed.
This project strengthened the city’s resilience to climate change by mapping green infrastructure and modeling future climate scenarios. Pilot activities in Balçova involved ecosystem service mapping, climate education for students, and wide dissemination of results through trainings, printed materials, and an international conference. PAD acted as co-applicant with İzmir Metropolitan Municipality.
The project aimed to raise awareness about urban trees and their ecosystem benefits through the development of the “Ağacım” mobile application. This open-data platform encouraged citizen participation in tree inventory efforts and enabled public access to ecological data. A technical guide on tree inventory and ecosystem services was also published.

Every landscape—rural or urban, natural or cultural, degraded or preserved—has a story.

The growing population and advancing technology require new infrastructure. However, site selection and routing must be planned in a way that minimizes damage to landscapes (H. Alphan).

Wind energy is becoming increasingly widespread. Today, many landscapes are dominated by wind turbines. How does this view make you feel? Harmony? Contrast? Technology? The future? (H. Alphan).

In Aveiro, tides shape the rhythm of the city. Boats rise and fall, buildings reflect on the canal. A daily dance between land and sea (S. Narlı).
